Missoma began as a passion project for founder Marisa Hordern in 2008, creating demi-fine jewelry aimed at layering and everyday wear. Over the years, it grew into a $25 million business stocked in high-end stores such as Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and Nordstrom. Yet 97% of its sales remain direct to customer, driving the team’s focus on an agile online experience.
By late 2019, unprecedented traffic on Black Friday – Cyber Monday pushed Missoma’s custom platform to its limit. With Christmas and Boxing Day looming, the small IT team of three knew they couldn’t risk downtime or sluggish performance. They needed a stable, scalable platform—and fast.
Working against the clock, Missoma’s team opted to replatform to Shopify Plus during its busiest month. In just eight days, they migrated product catalogs, customer data, and custom designs into the new system. The limited window meant every decision was prioritized on impact: non-essential features were paused, speeding up development.
Key to the process was clear roles and rapid sign-off. Marisa led strategy, CTO Simon Hamblin handled technical integration, and external Shopify Plus experts supported deployment. End-to-end testing ran overnight, ensuring order flows and checkout remained seamless.
The migration finished with almost zero loss of site functionality. Missoma cut its monthly infrastructure and licensing costs by 60%, eliminating reliance on third-party security monitoring. The brand now operates on a zero-code backend, freeing the team to focus on growth features instead of server upkeep.
Post-migration, Missoma launched gift cards and a loyalty program within weeks. The team also started building a necklace layering tool that lets customers mix and match before they buy, all without extra engineering overhead.
With platform issues off the table, Missoma is charting its international expansion strategy. Future plans include localized storefronts, multicurrency pricing, and deeper integrations with global logistics partners. The agile foundation on Shopify Plus means small tweaks no longer require long build cycles, so they can test new markets in days, not months.
