In 2008, Molly Mundt and her three terriers faced a daily chore: hauling heavy, soiled dog beds up San Francisco hills to reach a laundromat. She dreamed of a cover that could slip off and go straight into a washer. Partnering with friend and fellow designer Art Simon, they founded Molly Mutt with a simple goal: create stylish, washable covers and durable pet bedding in eco-friendly fabrics.
As the brand’s popularity soared, its Magento 1 site became a maintenance burden. Security patches, server scaling, and hosting management diverted focus from design innovation. When official support for Magento 1 ended in 2019, Molly Mutt realized it was time to offload technical upkeep to a cloud platform that could handle spikes in traffic without manual intervention.
After vetting solutions like Shopify and BigCommerce, the team chose BigCommerce for its robust native features and partner approach. Working with BigCommerce’s implementation experts and agency partner Modelic, they migrated their entire store, preserving SEO value and replatforming without downtime. Modelic also engineered a real-time bundle kit tool that links an offsite database with customers’ browsers, letting shoppers pick sizes, colors, and patterns—all while applying bundle discounts automatically.
BigCommerce’s out-of-the-box faceted search, B2B pricing lists, and customer groups empowered Molly Mutt to serve both direct consumers and wholesale partners. They supplemented these capabilities with no-code Tag Rocket for tag management and LimeSpot for personalized recommendations, crafting an engaging shopping experience without extra hosting costs.
Initially, Molly Mutt deployed a built-in BigCommerce theme and witnessed a 170% year-over-year revenue jump in the first year. Buoyed by this momentum, they commissioned Modelic to design a fully custom template—complete with playful icons, sustainability badges, and even a Spotify playlist embedded in the FAQ. This creative overhaul not only deepened brand identity but added another 31% to annual revenue.
By year three on BigCommerce, Molly Mutt’s average order value climbed 13%, a testament to streamlined bundles and targeted app integrations. Looking ahead, the team plans to expand into more marketplaces and ramp up B2B Edition for wholesale growth. Armed with a scalable platform and proven playbook, Molly Mutt is ready to reach pet owners wherever they shop.
