In July 2023, Sean Dollwet pushed his Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) business to new heights. With a mixed portfolio of 25 books—low-content and high-content alike—he generated $4,522 in sales. This case study breaks down his exact playbook: from content categories and ad tactics to translation and bundling moves.
Many new KDP authors hit a wall when they underprice or undervalue their work, while buyers ignore unreviewed listings. Sean solved both issues. He started by diversifying his catalog into 6 segments: coloring books, word-search puzzles, lead-generation guides, Spanish translations, high-content manuscripts, and audio-focused titles on Audible.
By splitting 25 books across several genres, Sean tapped multiple buyer interests. He launched adult and kids coloring books, pocket-sized word searches, and short lead-generation freebies designed to capture email addresses. High-content books were ghostwritten via The Urban Writers, saving him time on writing.
Every new release was priced at $0.99 to encourage quick sales and organic reviews. He personally requested about 40 initial reviews, then let Amazon’s algorithm push the listings. Reviews jumped past 100 in some cases, making subsequent ads far more efficient.
In July, Sean invested $2,158 in Amazon Advertising targeting niche keywords and competitor titles. That spend produced approximately $4,522 in gross sales across KDP and ACX audio royalties—a 2.1X return on ad spend.
Spanish translations delivered quick wins: one translated title hit $300 revenue in June and matched that in July. Next up, Sean will bundle related books into value packs, commanding higher price points and boosting total order value with zero new content.
Overall, high-content books outperformed low-content by volume, but low-content offered faster time-to-market and email capture. Monthly revenue rose from $3,000 in June to over $4,500 in July (including Audible). With each new release and optimized ad campaign, income climbed by roughly 50% month-over-month.
Sean’s formula is simple: diversify content, jumpstart with low pricing, gather reviews, reinvest in ads, and expand via translations and bundling. While high-content titles drive the biggest checks, low-content ensures consistent sales and list growth. Follow his steps, and you can build a scaled self-publishing business on Amazon KDP.
